Sauvignon blanc wine is one of the world’s most popular white wine grapes, prized for its unique citrus, fruity aroma, and refreshingly high acidity.
Sauvignon blanc refers both to the grapes and the wines made from them. The grape is native to France, but it is now grown in wine-producing regions worldwide, such as Canada, New Zealand, Chile, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, and the USA.
Although the grape has been grown in France, sauvignon blanc has been growing in popularity due to the innovative wines from New Zealand.
The grape was introduced to New Zealand in 1975 when Marlborough’s first Sauvignon Blanc vines were planted, and producers soon realized that the climate was ideal for ripening the Sauvignon Blanc grapes. It is now New Zealand’s most widely planted variety producing unique, exuberant, and intense wines.

Sauvignon Blanc Style
Most sauvignon blanc are made in a medium-bodied and dry style. It is refreshing and easy to drink, with moderate alcohol and elevated acidity. Dry Sauvignon Blancs are usually fermented in stainless steel instead of oak, which contributes to their crisp texture.
On the palate, dry sauvignon blanc tastes similar to how it smells, such as lime and grapefruit, passion fruit, white peach, and bell pepper. If it is aged in oak barrels, it will have vanilla notes and a riper tropical fruit profile.
The Sauvignon Blanc Aromas and Tastes are gooseberries, grapefruit, lime, passionfruit, fresh herbs, green grass, green peppers, jalapeño
Because sauvignon blanc has so much character on its own, it is usually made as a varietal wine rather than blended.
Sauvignon blanc made in stainless steel should be served ice coled around 7°C to highlight its refreshing qualities. While wines with oak aging should be served slightly chilled around 12°C
